Girls from different grades met up to be introduced to F.L.Y. girls. Our counselors Mrs. Martinez and Mrs. Moreno are the leaders of the F.L.Y. girls program to improve our community. Once we had our team we started discussing how to improve our community life style. When we brainstormed we had to be considerate because this affects Southeast middle school as well. Once we had our mission we got assigned jobs and focused on living a healthy life style. Tons of advertisement around the world discuss that we should be healthier, but do we listen? Most of the time no. That's why F.L.Y. girls educated students of how our eating habits don't mostly have healthy nutrient facts. We advocated on developing student's mental health and physical health.
We went into classrooms to bring awareness on the ingredients of some popular snacks that our peers consume on a daily basis. Our peers were surprised to learn the effects that each ingredient has on their body and mental health. It was scary for the 6th grade presenters to go into the 8th grade class, but as they went class to class, they built their confidence and the presentation was performed with ease.
Preparing for the 5K race was a lot of work and we learned that the preparations have to get started from the beginning to avoid the stress towards the end. We were impressed with the amount of support we received from our peers and teachers.
One thing that ran smoothly as we prepared for the events was that our FLY girls team members took responsibility for their strength and focused on accomplishing the tasks they were good at. The website was maintained on a consistent basis and the presenters were on top of their preparations.
One of the things we could of pushed harder was to push thru the challenges with the student store limiting the healthier snacks due to the districts policies. We met with the store manager and assistant and although they were supportive in our mission, we were unable to see a change as the list of approved snacks still did not convince us as healthy.
Students still have a hard time choosing healthier snacks, but we loved seeing how much they enjoyed the healthier snacks we had them sample. Our peers enjoyed them so much, they forgot that they were eating a healthier snack.
We learned that reducing negative emotions can lead us to happier lives. We hope that our peers can now rise above the negativity, make healthier choices, stay active and love themselves regardless. First Love Yourself!
